Putting the “Green” in Greenways

By Karl Alexander, Greenways Program Manager

Did you know there are at least ten community gardens located along the Mystic Greenways?

Community Gardens are not just a place for growing plants but community as well. For visitors and gardeners alike, these public spaces offer lush, green surroundings that can benefit mental wellness and a space for mindful contemplation. Aiding a mission of food sovereignty, they offer a space to grow food responsive to the cultural and dietary needs of the grower.

The Mystic Greenways provides an amazing canvas from which community gardens have sprouted. Just look at the Northern Strand Community Trail, where the City of Malden, City of Everett, Everett Community Growers, and countless volunteers have established three gardens with hundreds of raised beds since the trail opened just over a decade ago.
